A joint venture between Shimizu Corporation and Konoike Construction both from Japan, won the contract to build the flyover at Clocktower Roundabout in Central Kampala. At various points around the site which includes both the clock tower and Nsambya junctions temporary retaining walls are required to perform work next to the roads and drainage channels which criss-cross the area.

SKJV asked EA Piling to install two short sheet pile walls using a stock of sheet piles they have imported for all their temporary works. The retaining walls will allow the main contractor to excavate for a culvert in a tight working space between the current road from clock tower to Nsambya junction and existing water infrastructure.

The two walls were each 10m long. A frame was welded together at the site to pitch the piles vertically before driving them with a BSP SL30 crane slung hammer. The 400mm wide, U profile sheet piles were provided by the main contractor, and driven to approximately 9m embedment.

Mobilisation was possible within a few days and installation was completed in just over a week.

Once the works were backfilled, EA Piling remobilised to site and removed the temporary sheet piles with a crane slung vibrodriver.
