Gabiro Agribusiness Hub: Secant Piled Water Intake

Scope of Services:

438no. 800mm rotary piles for secant retaining walls for a water intake structure.

Location: Nyagatare District, Rwanda

Completion Date: January 2023

Main Contractor: Netafim Rwanda Limited

Client: Rwanda Government

Project Description:

This prestigious project, developed by the Government of Rwanda, will irrigate 15,600 hectares of arable land in Rwanda’s Eastern Province. EA Piling was awarded the contract to install the secant piled walls and bearing piles for the massive water intake for the irrigation scheme.

Located at the northern tip of Akagera National Park, the water intake will pump millions of litres of water from the Akagera River up into a man-made storage reservoir.

A watertight river wall and vast sump is required to protect the valuable pumping equipment from the river waters. EA Piling successfully completed a network of secant piled walls comprising 438no. 800mm diameter rotary bored piles, reinforced with HEB steel beams.

To facilitate installation of the reinforcing beams, EA Piling manufactured a custom-made guidance frame which fitted onto the temporary casing. This ensured that all beams are located in the centre of the piles.

Piling adjacent to the river carried significant risks which were mitigated by the construction of a high-quality earthen cofferdam and piling platform, designed in partnership with EA Piling.

To facilitate quality and rapid execution of the project, we employed our Soilmec R620 and Bauer BG18 piling rigs. The rigs performed well together to secure substantial savings to the client’s estimated programme.

The project showcases EA Piling’s competence in adapting to different sectors, mobilisation scenarios, and our international reach.
