UFZA Southern Embankment Slope Stabilisation: Soil Nailing

Scope of Services:

Design, supply of materials and stabilisation of over 1,500 m2 of slope using soil nails and shotcrete.

Location: Entebbe International Airport, Uganda

Completion Date: November 2022

Main Contractor: NEC

Client: Uganda Free Zone Authority

Project Description:

Uganda Free Zones Authority (UFZA) is developing a free-zone within Entebbe International Airport which comprises several warehouse units. The premises are located on a steep embankment which requires stabilisation.

EA Piling was selected to design and implement a slope stabilisation scheme for the project. Our design comprises a 13m height slope, cut to 60-degrees, and reinforced with soil nails and a shotcrete finish. This design creates space for an adjacent warehouse, located just 8m away from the top of the slope.

Once the contract was awarded, EA Piling proceeded to detailed design, which achieved significant optimisations for the client as compared to the budgeted quantities. By onboarding EA Piling to complete the design, the client was rewarded with significant cost savings.

EA Piling then manufactured and installed over 900 soil nails in 114mm diameter holes to 12m depth using our Klemm 803 mini drilling rig. Each hole was triple grouted to ensure sufficient anchoring capacity. We then installed strip drains, reinforcing mesh, head plates and a 100mm thick shotcrete facing onto the slope.

In this prestigious landmark project, EA Piling demonstrated our turnkey design and build work model. Our specialist staff were able to achieve large efficiency savings saving time and project budget.
